Gaza Dreams

1.      Set your TV to record ‘Gaza Dreams’

This Saturday a new, if all too short, documentary on the impact of Israel’s blockade of Gaza for its people’s mental health will be shown at 4.30am and 9.30pm on the BBC News Channel. It will be on the BBC iPlayer after the broadcast, here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0bmbg68

An attempt to put Israel’s relationship with Gaza in context, and to counter the dominant narrative in which Israel is somehow the victim of Gazan aggression, see this brief video:

2.      A defeat for us, and for the struggle against racism

The dismal spectacle of the Labour leadership flailing under pressure from an Establishment determined to exclude critical voices on Israel/Palestine from mainstream public debate has no doubt depressed many of us. The NEC had produced a superior document[1] for party members concerned to understand and protect themselves and their party from anti-Semitism. This only enraged those determined to muddle anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism, who drove hard for the adoption of the full IHRA document[2]. (For a comparison, see https://www.opendemocracy.net/uk/brian-klug/code-of-conduct-for-antisemitism-tale-of-two-texts).  Despite appeals from 40 Jewish organisations[3] and over 80 Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups[4], Labour capitulated, undermined by a majority of its own MPs. The Jewish Chronicle is one of several media outlets making explicit its wish to see ‘hundreds, if not thousands’[5] of Party members expelled for their determination to press for democratic change in Israel/Palestine.

As delegates prepare to descend on Liverpool this weekend, we recall Naomi Wimborne-Idrissi’s brief but powerful contribution[6] to last year’s Party Conference, and the standing ovation she received. We hope that the party’s sanity and honour will be retrieved at this year’s gathering.

We recommend signing up to Jonathan Cook’s blog from Nazareth – Jonathan’s articles are always worth reading, both on the situation in Israel/Palestine and his reflections on developments in the UK. For example, see:

3.      Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions

The Guardian has published a useful article about the BDS campaign, here:

And explore the BDS movement itself, here:
