Sustaining a counter-narrative

The mainstream media does not, in our view, offer balanced reporting on the situation in Palestine. At this critical time, it is helpful to have access to news items, video footage, speakers and opinions that are routinely excluded from the BBC, Guardian, Channel 4 etc. We have produced a short list of alternative outlets that both produce more in-depth coverage and analysis, and often critique the shortcomings of the more popular and well-known media groups shaping public opinion. In each case, we have included a link to an example of their coverage to illustrate their work. We are not endorsing the views expressed in every one of these items, but we do think they are worth listening to or watching.

There are excellent sources that focus on the Palestinian question, such as Electronic IntifadaMondeweiss+972 Magazine, etc: sign up for newsletters from each of these outlets. In addition, we suggest exploring these media groups:

Novara Media: offering intelligent political reflection on current affairs each weekday evening. NM has been producing excellent videos dissecting mainstream coverage of Gaza in recent weeks, as in this piece with Norman Filkelstein. As well as providing in-depth background, such as this interview with Rashid Khalidi.

Counterpunch: among its offerings is the piece Condemn Hamas? It’s time we flipped the Script, challenging the mainstream practice of viewing the atrocity of October 7th out of context, and as a cover for Israel’s genocidal response.

Democracy Now: renowned US outlet, here Amy Goodman interviews Peter Beinart & Omer Bartov on UPenn President Resignation, Gaza & the Weaponization of Antisemitism

The Intercept carries useful material,

Tribune has just published this from Jeremy Corbyn: Look at Gaza: Our Political Class only pays lip-service to Human Rights

The Nation is worth checking out, for example for the long overview, Israel is losing this War, and Mohammed el-Kurd’s The Right to Speak for Ourselves
